About this book
In the fractured steppes of the late twelfth century, where clans war over grass and horses, a boy named Temüjin survives the murder of his father and the abandonment of his clan by the Tayichiud. Around him gather the ambitious, the desperate, and the visionary. Among them is Barsbayar, called Bars, a young warrior of a minor splinter clan who forges an early and unbreakable bond with the future conqueror.
As Temüjin rises — allying with the powerful Kerait leader Toghrul, swearing the *anda* (blood-brother) oath with his childhood friend Jamukha, rescuing his bride Borte from the Merkits — Bars rises with him. But the cost of unity is high. Old allies become enemies. The anda bond fractures. Saran, a young shamaness with true and terrible visions, becomes Bars’ lover and conscience. She sees the coming storm clearly: the cities of the south and west will teach the nomads their weakness, and the nomads will become what they destroy.
Literary historical fiction in the tradition of Wolf Hall or The Name of the Rose crossed with the sweep of Shōgun—lyrical but grounded, visceral but never gratuitous, with strong female characters and a non-Eurocentric setting.
